Heavy Rains Lash Andhra Pradesh: IMD Issues Alerts Amid Weather Disruptions

April 13, 2025 – Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is currently experiencing significant rainfall due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, leading to widespread weather disruptions across the state.

Weather Systems Behind the Rainfall

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes the current weather conditions to a trough extending from North and Central Maharashtra to North Tamil Nadu at an altitude of 0.9 km above sea level. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal and nearby regions, extending up to 5.8 km above sea level, is facilitating the formation of a low-pressure area that is influencing weather patterns across Andhra Pradesh.

Affected Regions

Several districts in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, including Alluri Sitharama Raju, Kakinada, East Godavari (Tuni, Amalapuram), Anantapur, Annamayya, and Tirupati, have reported heavy rainfall. The IMD has also predicted continued heavy rainfall in Anakapalli, Kona Seema, and Kakinada district.

IMD Alerts and Advisories

The IMD has issued warnings for continued heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in various parts of Andhra Pradesh. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow weather updates, avoid open areas during storms, and refrain from unnecessary travel, especially in vulnerable region.

Impact on Agriculture

Unseasonal rains have caused significant damage to crops, particularly banana plantations, in several districts. Farmers are urged to take necessary precautions to mitigate further losses.

Temperature Relief

Prior to the rainfall, many parts of the state experienced soaring temperatures, with districts like Kurnool, Prakasam, Nandyala, Srikakulam, and Palnadu recording temperatures over 40°. The current rainfall is expected to bring a much-needed drop in temperatures across coastal and inland Andhra Pradesh.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of adverse weather conditions.
