Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil, in a strong statement on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed that India will block the flow of Indus River waters to Pakistan.

“The historic decision taken by the Modi government on the Indus Water Treaty is fully justified and in the national interest. We will ensure not even a drop of water from the Indus River reaches Pakistan,” Patil wrote.

The Jal Shakti Ministry has formally notified Pakistan about India’s decision via a letter to Syed Ali Murtuza, Secretary in Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources. The letter cited Pakistan’s continued cross-border terrorism as a violation of good faith under the treaty.

Suspend Indus Waters: Key Action Plans and Future Strategy

At the high-level meeting, officials discussed immediate and long-term strategies:

  • Immediate Actions:
    • De-silting and improving capacity of existing dams on the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers to minimize water flow to Pakistan.

    • Construction of new reservoirs and hydroelectric projects to store and utilize water more effectively within India.
  • Legal and Diplomatic Efforts:
    • Preparation of a legal response in case of international pressure, especially from the World Bank.
