India Weather Update for April 16, 2025: Heatwave Alerts and Rising Temperatures Nationwide

As of April 16, 2025, India is experiencing a significant rise in temperatures, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue heatwave warnings across multiple regions. This surge in heat is attributed to prevailing weather patterns, with relief expected post-April 19 due to an anticipated Western Disturbance.

Heatwave Alerts Across Northern and Western India

The IMD has issued Yellow and Orange alerts for several states, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, East and West Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. These regions are witnessing temperatures soaring 3–4°C above normal, with Delhi’s maximum temperatures expected to remain elevated until April 18. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours.

Hot and Humid Conditions in Southern India

Southern states like Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Telangana are grappling with hot and humid weather conditions. The IMD has highlighted the need for caution in these areas, emphasizing the importance of protective measures against heat-related health risks.

Temperature Trends and Forecast

April 2025 has been notably warmer than average, with temperatures approximately 1.9°C higher than historical norms. Forecasts indicate that temperatures could reach up to 42.5°C in the coming days, particularly in northern and central regions.. The IMD predicts a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2–4°C over Northwest India until April 18, followed by a potential decrease due to the expected Western Disturbance.

Monsoon Outlook and Economic Implications

In a positive development, the Indian government forecasts above-average monsoon rainfall for the second consecutive year in 2025, estimating it at 105% of the long-term average. This projection, supported by the absence of El Niño conditions, is anticipated to boost agricultural output, stabilize food prices, and support economic growth. However, certain areas in northwest, northeast, and southern Peninsular India may receive below-average rainfall.

Precautionary Measures

Residents across the affected regions are urged to:

  • Stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
  • Wear light, breathable clothing and use sun protection.
  • Pay special attention to vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Stay informed and take necessary precautions to safeguard your health during this period of intense heat.
