US Trump Imposes 104% Tariff on Chinese Imports, Effective Midnight: White House Confirms

Washington, D.C. | April 8, 2025
The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump is imposing a sweeping 104% tariff on all Chinese imports, effective midnight tonight. The move comes as tensions between the U.S. and China escalate, with Beijing vowing to “fight to the end” in response to U.S. trade actions.

Trump had earlier warned of additional tariffs if China proceeded with retaliatory measures. With no signs of Beijing backing down, the administration has moved forward, taking total added duties on Chinese goods this year to 104%, according to AFP.

Trump’s Message:

“China wants to make a deal badly, but they don’t know how to get it started. We are waiting for their call. It will happen!”
Trump wrote on social media.

Despite the harsh rhetoric, Trump hinted that negotiations could still happen — though not immediately.

No Priority Talks With China

According to Reuters, U.S. officials have said that negotiations with China are not a priority at the moment. The administration is instead focusing on talks with allies like Japan and South Korea.

“We’ve been instructed to prioritise our allies,” said White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett on Fox News.

Markets React

Global markets had been rattled by the escalating trade war, with recent tariff announcements sparking fears of a global recession. However, U.S. stocks recovered slightly today after suffering massive losses last week that wiped out trillions from the markets.

China Hits Back

China has firmly rejected the U.S. move, calling it “blackmail,” and has promised to respond strongly. The Chinese government remains defiant and committed to retaliating against what it views as unfair trade practices.

Global Trade Fallout

The Trump administration is also engaging in trade talks with Vietnam and Indonesia, who have shown willingness to reduce tariffs on U.S. goods. Several other countries have reached out to Washington, trying to avoid becoming collateral damage in the growing tariff war.
