Reviving Amaravati: A Global Vision for Andhra Pradesh

Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Revival of Amaravati Capital

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has officially invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the groundbreaking ceremony of the ambitious Amaravati Capital Project on May 2, 2025. This high-profile event signals the revival of Naidu’s long-standing dream to build a world-class capital city for Andhra Pradesh, strategically located on the banks of the Krishna River.

Originally launched in 2015, the Amaravati project faced years of stagnation due to political transitions and funding challenges. With Naidu’s return to power in 2024, the government has reignited the development with renewed vision, planning, and partnerships.

Amaravati’s City Blueprint: Inspired by Global Metropolises

Spanning an impressive 217.23 square kilometers between Vijayawada and Guntur, Amaravati is being designed by the globally renowned firm Foster + Partners (UK). The master plan is modeled after modern, efficient cities like Singapore, Amsterdam, and Tokyo.

Key Development Goals:

  • Target Population: 3.5 million
  • Employment Creation: 1.5 million jobs
  • Projected GDP: USD 35 billion by 2050
  • Sustainability Focus: Green infrastructure, smart governance, and inclusive urban spaces

Naidu’s vision is to transform Amaravati into a knowledge and innovation hub with advanced healthcare, education, digital connectivity, and transport infrastructure.

Massive Funding and Strategic Global Partnerships

The total project budget has been finalized at ₹64,910 crore. Funding is being mobilized from multiple sources:

Funding Breakdown:

  • ₹15,000 crore from the Central Government
  • USD 800 million from the World Bank
  • USD 800 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB)

To ensure transparency and efficient execution, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) has been formed. The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) is overseeing planning, while Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) are being used to accelerate infrastructure and attract foreign investment.

Political Coordination and National Development

During his visit to Delhi, Naidu also expressed his solidarity with the Union Government’s fight against terrorism, referring to the tragic recent attack in Pahalgam. His strong coordination with the Centre reflects a unified approach to both regional and national development.

He also held key discussions with Union Ministers regarding other priority projects for Andhra Pradesh, including smart cities, high-speed rail corridors, and industrial zones.

Local Reactions and Public Expectations About Amaravati

The announcement has sparked renewed hope among residents, farmers, and investors in the region. Many see the revived Amaravati project as a major economic boost, capable of transforming Andhra Pradesh into one of India’s most forward-looking states.

Infrastructure experts and economists have praised the state’s clear road map and international backing, citing Amaravati as a potential model for other states.
