New Study Reveals Mediterranean Diet Can Improve Heart Health

April 16, 2025 | Health & Science –

A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has found that following a Mediterranean diet can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 25%. The Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and olive oil, has long been known for its health benefits, but this new research confirms its powerful role in cardiovascular health.

Researchers followed over 20,000 participants for 10 years, observing their eating habits and heart health. Those who consistently followed the Mediterranean diet showed lower levels of LDL (bad cholesterol), improved blood pressure, and reduced inflammation markers—key factors in preventing heart disease and stroke.

Dr. Linda Rowe, the study’s lead author, explained, “The Mediterranean diet is not just a fad. It’s a sustainable and enjoyable way to eat that supports heart health over the long term.”

The diet is also associated with weight management and reduced risk of diabetes and certain cancers. Experts recommend including more plant-based meals, reducing red meat, and using healthy fats like olive oil.

This new evidence supports global health recommendations to shift towards diets rich in whole, unprocessed foods. With heart disease remaining the leading cause of death worldwide, adopting the Mediterranean diet could be a simple yet powerful step toward a healthier future.
